What’s happening in Haiti? Explainer on the gang violence in Port-au-Prince

Armed gangs have taken over parts of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.

In the past few weeks, the city has been plunged into chaos, with regular Haitians, including kids, caught in the middle. 

The gangs, which are armed groups that participate in organized crime, have targeted government buildings, banks and even private homes. 

The government declared a state of emergency on March 3, after the gangs attacked several prisons, releasing thousands of prisoners onto the streets.

Haiti has a long history of instability and its citizens are at the mercy of gangs, making life extremely difficult for people there.
