UN rights body to hold urgent meeting on Haiti

The U.N. says its top human rights body will hold an urgent meet­ing Wednes­day on Haiti.The U.N. said Mon­day that the spe­cial ses­sion of the Human Rights Coun­cil was requested by Brazil and is sup­ported by 32 of the body’s 47 members.

The Geneva-based coun­cil has pre­vi­ously held urgent meet­ings fol­low­ing the cyclone that hit Myan­mar in 2008 and con­flicts in Lebanon, Dar­fur, Congo and the Pales­tin­ian territories.

Since its cre­ation in 2006, it has also con­vened spe­cial ses­sions on global hunger and the impact of the finan­cial cri­sis on human rights.
