Half-Hour for Haiti Action Alert: Summer Reading

Be Part of the Solution for Haiti: Make a Difference in Half an Hour a Week

Updates

IJDH Attorney Nicole Phillips spoke at a briefing on Haiti by key stakeholders hosted by Rep. Maxine Waters in Los Angeles on August 7.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our last action calling for an end to forced evictions of the internally displaced, we received over 1,000 signatures and it has provided a platform for continued advocacy.

The last two months have been busy for IJDH. Our headquarters officially moved to Boston, we launched two new projects addressing gender-based violence and violations of the right to housing, and conducted a follow-up survey of camp conditions with a delegation of students from the University of San Francisco. We are particularly excited about our newly formed partnership with the Goldin Institute on the Rape Accountability and Prevention Project, which has allowed us to staff the Project with a full-time paralegal/ grassroots coordinator.

Summer Reading Suggestions

The BAI’s Mario Joseph and IJDH Attorney Blaine Bookey hosted a press conference on sexual violence in the camps and the response of the Haitian government and international community.

In honor of summer, this alert’s activity is only reading. It isn’t light, but some of the best short pieces about Haiti we have seen:

  • Report on rapes in the displacement camps: Our Bodies Are Still Trembling: Haitian Women’s Fight Against Rape, by IJDH and distinguished collaborators;
  • Congressional testimony of founding IJDH Board member Dr. Paul Farmer and IJDH Board Chair Ira Kurzban for a July 27 hearing held by the Congressional Black Caucus
  • Issue briefs prepared by IJDH and other members of the Haiti Advocacy Working Group for the July 27 CBC hearing. The briefs are all short (2 pages or less) and concise, and together provide an excellent summary of the complicated situation on the ground in Haiti.

As always, we welcome your feedback and input. Thank you in advance for getting informed, a first and necessary step for the engagement that Haitians need from us to win respect for their human rights.
