This week the US House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives will vote on the Debt Relief for Earth­quake Recov­ery in Haiti (HR4573) act intro­duced last month by Max­ine Waters (D-CA). The bill would direct the Sec­re­tary of the Trea­sury to use its influ­ence to imme­di­ately can­cel Haiti’s debts to inter­na­tional insti­tu­tions. Con­gress is using its power to make sure that the inter­na­tional com­mu­nity fol­lows through on its word to can­cel Haiti’s debt.
